Macbook Pro 13

The MBP 13″ unibody arrived on 7th September. First thing I did was restoring my iTunes library and uploaded my runs to Nike+ which are both very important to me. I also transferred my iPhone app purchases from iPhone to my iTunes library as a safety measure.

Next important thing is to install Windows 7 RC using Boot Camp such that my MBP can be used in my office environment. This is probably the most popular howto for installation of Windows 7 using Boot Camp on Mac OS. However things might have changed and software got updated along the way since I’m having OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard pre-installed on my MBP and various versions of Windows 7 and updates and have evolved. To my surprise everything worked a lot smoother than I have ever expected.

There are couple of things worth mentioning here if readers are like me having the latest hardware/software.

Referring to this Simple Help

  • Step 11: once you clicked the ‘reformat’ it didn’t start automatically I had to click ‘next’
  • There were 2 reboots and it was OK to have the installation DVD stayed in the drive after the 2nd reboot setting up of Windows and desktop then began
  • Removal of the installation DVD can be done at the very end
  • After updating the Windows 7 installation I ran setup from the OS X installation disk
  • Then I got sound and video card working

Windows 7 on Macbook

March 24, 2009

I have tried Bootcamp and dual boot my MacBook with XP. I can’t try running Vista because I have an upgrade version of it. Now with Windows 7 beta available I just tried that again in my MacBook.

My Macbook has a new HDD a while ago so I could use it again in the office before it’s forced to retire. Running bootcamp was easy but this time my HDD is too fragmented hence I need to clean it up and restore everything from my Time machine backup. I did this last Sunday making sure I have plenty of time.

Time machine restore didn’t fail me and it was done perfectly almost. A minor flaw was the mobile broadband which didn’t work instantly on restore. Found out also that I shouldn’t have expected customer service on a Sunday.

Getting Windows 7 to work in the office is a quite easy except that getting anti-virus to work was a bit difficult. I was too greedy to have tried latest AVG Free version 8.5 which turned out to be a problem even at installation, windows gave me a blue screen/memory dump and shutdown. Uninstall didn’t work so I used system restore. I used AVG’s removal tool but still it couldn’t completely get rid of it as I can see resident shield service is still running. At last removal has to be done manually at many places by looking at the removal tool error log.

I don’t know why as this article says that AVG free edition should work!

Moving movie clips and music

October 31, 2008

I have now all my movie clips moved to my external harddisk following hints from this article. Before that I created a 250G partition for data and left the rest for time machine backup.

Next would be moving my musics this post would be steps to follow.

I noticed the other day that my MacBook harddisk has only twenty something Gb left so I have to move clips and music to external storage.
