P.S. 似乎 Amazon 扒了 Google and Apple 頭

Garmin HRM

March 27, 2011

I have done another experiment to prove that it’s the HRM and not my heart which caused the scary spikes. Today I deliberately ran slow with a target strike rate of 80. I have lots of experience that at this stride rate my HR should be near 150 or so, this proved to be correct for the first 7k or so. Ignored the pace I followed a tall guy who was just brisk walking in front of me.

At around 8k spikes came again as can be seen below it peaked at 190 so I cleaned the chest belt then I dropped to 164-175-149. My heart just won’t slow down that fast. I then ramped up my stride rate from 80 to 90 …. wow my pace was near 6 min/k while HR was steady at 160.

From below it’s very obvious that HR reading started to look weird near 8k and steadied down even if I run faster.

The key findings are:-

  • RH is low say 50% or so
  • Windy that could dry out sweat quicker
  • Not hot, not sweating enough
  • A layer of dried sweat can be formed at 8-9k

I think Garmin’s HRM is more sensitive than miCoach’s as I never had to wet the contacts after putting the chestbelt on even if weather is dry. I only had a few cases of HR spikes so far when using miCoach.

By the way I felt very easy bouncy and light at the last km running at high stride rate.

Today we didn’t run the route we intended but I had 2 successful experiments done. I saw a few questions in RunKeeper user forum about what if mobile network isn’t available would GPS still work? This is found to be affirmative, i.e. GPS works fine even if you don’t have mobile network reception. The downside is battery drains faster.

The next finding is about my HR spike that’s covered at the end of this entry.

From the starting point looking up to the dam

Let’s check out the map, that didn’t work, we made a few wrong turns still

With a few wrong turns this is what we ended up with, no tarmac road

There was no signal for my carrier even Google map didn’t work, more than once RunKeeper’s GPS came to rescue. We should have brought a paper map.

The Bing map on Garmin is hopeless

Today I think I discovered what caused HR spike. I have lots of photo stops today and deliberation for direction and humidity is only moderate. My sweat under the chestbelt dried up and I felt the salt crystal on my skin. I saw the peak of 199 while I wasn’t on load at all, in fact I was descending on a moderate slope. The way I cured that was to use my shirt to clean the contacts and removed the salt crystal from my skin.

Walk and run

March 20, 2011

It wasn’t easy to stop running for 7 days, luckily weather wasn’t that bad, I mean it didn’t rain this morning. It was humid, misty and a bit wet on the road.

My friend and I walked for about 1.25k as his knee complained a bit. I raced (better than 6min/k) a bit at the last 1.5k or so. We didn’t plan this interval training but it was quite interesting. From the chart below I can see that HR takes time to slow down but shoot up pretty quickly when I resumed running.

Garmin gave 11k while RunKeeper Pro said I did 11.32k, look at the last 2 laps I haven’t ran this fast for a long time.

I worried about HR spike, I didn’t have that today. There was a point of 170 (at that pace, not surprised) near the end but Garmin registered a peak of 175 which I couldn’t locate along the curve. Never mind I felt good today.
